DVSA Confirms New MOT Rules for Heavy Vehicles from July 6

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed new MOT rules for heavy vehicles, set to take effect from July 6. The maximum service charge that Authorised Testing Facilities (ATFs) can levy for MOT tests on buses, coaches, HGVs, and trailers will increase, aiming to maintain a stable and sustainable vehicle testing network.

New Charges from July 6

From Monday, July 6, the maximum service charges will be £90 for buses and coaches (up from £70), £70 for HGVs (up from £55), and £50 for trailers (up from £40). These increases are intended to help ATFs cover rising costs and plan for future testing equipment needs. The DVSA noted that the new charges are below what would be expected if adjusted for inflation: £108 for buses/coaches, £85 for HGVs, and £62 for trailers.

Consultation Results

The DVSA conducted a consultation on "Changes to HGV, bus and trailer MOT centre service charges" last year, receiving 634 responses. The majority supported the increases, including 99% of ATFs and 95% of respondents who were both vehicle operators and ATFs. Among vehicle operators, 62% were in favour.

Impact on the Testing Network

The DVSA stated that the changes aim to keep the testing network sustainable, encouraging new ATFs where extra capacity and choice will benefit the vehicle operating industries. The adjustments are designed to ensure fleets can continue to access reliable MOT testing services for buses, coaches, HGVs, and trailers.
