Easyjet Update for UK Tourists Flying to Europe

Easyjet has issued an "important" update for passengers flying from the UK short-haul to Europe. The new European Union Entry and Exit, or EES, system is now in force, with holidaymakers flying with Easyjet warned.

What Is the EES System?

The European Union Entry and Exit System (EES) is a new automated border control system that registers non-EU travellers entering and exiting the Schengen Area. It requires biometric data collection, including facial images and fingerprints, at border checks.

Easyjet's Alert

On its website, Easyjet - which flies from Birmingham - has issued an "important" alert. The airline, which is rivalled by Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and more, said: "Important update – new border checks may affect queue times."

"Airports across Europe may experience longer waiting times at passport control due to the new European Entry/Exit System (EES). This could mean you need to have your biometrics taken at border checks, including the scanning of facial images and fingerprints."

Tips for Travelling into the EU

Easyjet shared tips for travelling into the EU. The airline advised: "Download the easyJet app to get live updates on your flight, including when the gate opens."

"Make sure you have the correct documents for travel. You may experience extended wait times on arrival at your destination airport, so consider this when planning onward travel."

"Additional checks will also apply when leaving the EU, so please also allow extra time to make your way through the airport on your return trip."

For full details about the EES scheme and the participating countries, passengers are directed to visit the Travel to Europe website.

Mobile App for Pre-Registration

The article continues below with additional information: "The EU are currently rolling out a mobile app to support pre-registration for EES. Please check whether it is supported for the country you are travelling to/from before downloading."

"If you booked with easyJet holidays and you have a transfer included in your package, we’re working closely with our transfer partners to account for potential delays at border control."

The update from the carrier then added: "You can find your transfer provider’s contact details in your ‘get ready to go’ email, or on your view booking page."
