Foreign Office Warns UK Tourists: Never Hail Taxis in Brazil Streets
FCDO Warns: Don't Hail Taxis in Brazil Streets

The Foreign Office has updated its travel guidance for Brazil, issuing a fresh warning for UK tourists as the summer holiday season approaches. The FCDO has posted new information on scams, taxi travel, and regional risks via its Safety and security and Regional risks pages.

Taxi Travel Warning

The FCDO warned: "There have been reports of express kidnappings, assaults, and robberies from unlicensed taxis, including in cars using fraudulent internet-based taxi accounts. Do not hail taxis on the street." Tourists are advised to use authorised taxi booths available at most airports in Brazil. When using ride-hailing platforms, always check the number plate and driver match your confirmed booking before getting in. Users may track their journey through the app and, if necessary, share their location.

Scam Alerts

Bank and credit card scams are common in Brazil, including card cloning from ATMs and in shops. Payment machine and beach vendor scams have also been reported, particularly in busy tourist areas, where incorrect amounts may be charged or visitors may be overcharged. The FCDO advises: "Always keep sight of your card and check the amount displayed on the payment terminal before paying. Do not use an ATM if you notice anything suspicious." Tourists should ask for a receipt, regularly monitor bank statements, and contact their bank immediately if discrepancies arise. If cash withdrawn from an ATM has pink marks, speak to the bank or police straight away to get it changed, as it may have been marked as damaged or counterfeit.

Dating App Risks

The FCDO also highlighted that dating apps have been used by criminals to target foreign nationals in Brazil, leading to drink spiking, robbery, and theft from bank accounts. Tourists are urged to exercise caution when using such apps, buy and keep hold of their own drinks, share plans with friends or family, and remain vigilant of belongings, including mobile phones.
