Saltash Tunnel Speed Limits Return to 50mph After Upgrade

Drivers will soon see speed limits return to 50mph on a major route after months of 30mph restrictions. The upgrade to the Saltash Tunnel, which carries up to 40,000 vehicles daily between Devon and Cornwall, is now operational.

Tunnel Upgrade Completed

National Highways began a major refurbishment of the 38-year-old Saltash Tunnel in early 2025, aiming to bring systems up to modern standards. The upgrade was essential to ensure the tunnel remains fit for current and future use, according to tunnel manager Julian Mitchell.

"Our systems have been operating for over 20 years, so it was crucial to make the tunnel fit for now and the future," Mitchell said. "We are nearing the completion of this generational upgrade, which has been a significant challenge involving complex operations."

New Reversible Lane System

The key improvement is a new tidal flow lane control system, allowing traffic direction to be changed using overhead signals. This reversible lane enables traffic to flow in either direction depending on the time of day or conditions. Motorists are urged to obey the overhead signals.

National Highways continues to work on further upgrades, including new signage, dynamic lighting, power installations, fibre optics, electronic variable messaging signs at Carkeel near the Tamar Bridge and Manadon, and tunnel resurfacing. Overnight closures between Mondays and Thursdays will remain until later in the summer.

The entire scheme is expected to be fully complete later this year. A National Highways spokesperson confirmed: "The new tidal flow lane control system is now live at Saltash Tunnel and across the Tamar Bridge. Please obey the overhead signals."
