UK tourists planning summer trips to Spain have been issued a travel alert as mounting pressures on the air travel industry threaten to cause delays. Despite the short flight to destinations like Alicante or Malaga, experts warn that rising passenger numbers and ongoing airport pressures could lead to longer queues and limited availability during peak periods.
Airlines Cut Routes Amid Surging Demand
Ryanair has announced it will scale back some direct flights to Spain due to rising operational costs, potentially reducing options for travellers. CEO Eddie Wilson stated: "Next winter we will make further cuts to regional airport services, and I remind you that our total traffic in Spain for this summer will only grow by 0.5 per cent compared to 9 per cent in Italy, 11 per cent in Morocco or 20 per cent in Poland." This comes as demand for Spanish hotspots such as Alicante, Malaga, and Barcelona remains strong, which could lead to higher prices and fewer route choices.
ABTA Highlights Spain's Ongoing Popularity
ABTA – The Travel Association noted that Spain remains the number one overseas destination for UK travellers. Graeme Buck, Director of Communications, said: "Spain remains the number one overseas destination for UK travellers, and has been for decades. We’re continuing to see strong demand for holidays to mainland Spain and the Balearic and Canary Islands." He added that shifts in travel patterns due to the Middle East conflict have led more people to choose European destinations, further increasing pressure on Spanish routes.
New Passport Control System May Cause Delays
Buck also warned about the new Entry/Exit System (EES) passport control checks across Europe. "People have had mixed experiences with this new check, from no issue at all to lengthy queues," he said. Travellers are advised to follow guidance from their airline, airport, or travel provider, arrive early for return flights, and be prepared for possible queues at passport control.
As the busy summer season approaches, tourists are urged to check flight details carefully, allow extra time at airports, and anticipate potential disruption. Spain remains a top destination, but travellers should plan accordingly to avoid stress.
