Birmingham drivers have been hit with nearly 5,000 parking fines on Alum Rock Road in the first five months of 2025, continuing the road's reputation as a parking 'nightmare'. Freedom of Information data obtained by BirminghamLive reveals that 4,744 penalty charge notices were issued from January to May, averaging around 1,000 per month. This puts the road on course for over 10,000 fines by the end of the year.
Parking Chaos and Common Violations
Parking chaos remains the daily norm along Alum Rock Road, with patrolling traffic wardens quick to take action. Poor parking behaviour includes ignoring double yellow lines, overstaying time limits, failing to pay, and leaving vehicles on pavements, blocking shoppers and residents. The road, lined with shops and businesses, also has residential streets branching off, leading to severe congestion at peak times and fierce competition for spaces.
Even Worse: Stratford Road
While Alum Rock Road is a hotspot, Stratford Road through Sparkhill and Sparkbrook is even worse. Nearly 8,000 fines have been handed out there, where BirminghamLive recently witnessed extreme examples of poor parking. Stratford Road has long been among the city's top parking fine locations, alongside Alum Rock Road.
Other High-Fine Roads
Other roads with high numbers of parking fines include Washwood Heath Road (1,311 fines), Gas Street (1,202), and Cornwall Street (1,114). These figures highlight ongoing enforcement challenges across Birmingham.
