Motorists in the West Midlands have been issued a stark warning after police data revealed a massive surge in speeding offences across the region. Figures for 2025 show that approximately 90,000 drivers were caught breaking the limit by average speed cameras on key routes.
Birmingham's Ring Road Tops the Speeding Blacklist
The data, obtained from police forces, pinpoints the worst offending locations. The A4540 New John Street West in Birmingham was the region's most notorious speeding hotspot. An astonishing 18,528 offences were recorded at this single site up to November 2025, equating to an average of around 55 speeding incidents every single day.
Other sections of Birmingham's busy middle ring road also featured prominently. Both Leebank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway together recorded a further 13,481 speeding offences, confirming the ring road as a consistent area for dangerous driving and traffic violations.
Widespread Problem Across Major Routes
The issue of speeding is not confined to Birmingham's centre. Significant numbers of offences were logged on other major arterial roads feeding into the city. These include:
- The A45 Coventry Road with 8,178 offences.
- Sections of the A38 Bristol Road with 8,174 offences.
- The A41 Black Country New Road in Wednesbury, which recorded 7,876 southbound offences.
Thousands more drivers were caught on the A456 Hagley Road and the A4123 Birmingham New Road in Dudley. Even secondary routes like the A34 Birmingham Road and A34 New Town Row each saw over 4,000 captures, proving that speeding is a pervasive issue across the regional road network.
Cameras Are Active and Expansion is Planned
The sheer volume of penalties serves as a clear reminder to all drivers that the average speed camera systems throughout the West Midlands are fully operational and actively enforcing the law. Authorities use this data to identify which roads require the most urgent attention for safety improvements.
In a direct response to these alarming figures, officials have confirmed that more average speed cameras will be installed on Birmingham's roads in 2026. This expansion is part of a continued strategy to reduce road harm and protect all road users.
