A45 Small Heath speed cameras to be activated after week-long calibration
A45 Small Heath speed cameras: activation date set

Motorists using a major Birmingham route are being warned that a new fleet of speed cameras is just days away from going live.

Calibration Underway Ahead of Enforcement

Birmingham City Council has confirmed that the recently installed speed cameras along the A45 Small Heath Highway are currently undergoing a final calibration process. This essential technical work is expected to take approximately one week to complete.

A council spokeswoman stated: "The speed cameras and associated poles were installed on Small Heath Highway in December 2025. These cameras are currently undergoing calibration, which is a necessary step to ensure accuracy and compliance." She added that once calibration is finished, "the cameras will be activated, and enforcement will begin as appropriate."

The devices, accompanied by new signage, have been positioned along the dual carriageway stretch from the junction with Bolton Road to Heybarnes Circus. Their primary purpose is to enforce a new 30mph speed limit and tackle persistent speeding problems on this busy road.

Extended Camera Network Across Birmingham

This installation is not an isolated measure. The cameras on Small Heath Highway effectively extend an existing camera operation that runs from Berkeley Road to Bordesley Middleway.

Furthermore, Small Heath Highway is one of six key routes across the city selected for enhanced speed enforcement. The selection was based on areas with a higher number of collisions and where driver compliance with speed limits is historically poor.

The full list of new and extended speed camera locations in Birmingham is:

  • A45 Coventry Road (extension from Berkeley Road to Bordesley Middleway)
  • A47 Nechells/Fort Parkway (A4040 Ring-road to A452 Chester Road)
  • B4121 West Boulevard (Selcroft Avenue to California Way)
  • A34 Walsall Road (Wellington Road to Newton Road/City Boundary)
  • B4114 Washwood Heath Road (Ward End Park Road to Bromford Lane)
  • A34 Stratford Road (Coniston Close to Robin Hood Lane)

Consequences for Drivers

The message from authorities is clear: drivers must now adhere strictly to the new 30mph limit on the A45 Small Heath Highway. Once the cameras are activated, any motorist caught exceeding the speed limit will face the standard penalties.

This typically means a fixed penalty notice, a fine, and penalty points endorsed on the driver's licence. The council's move forms a significant part of a broader strategy to improve road safety on some of Birmingham's most challenging routes.
