Motorists were seen driving through deep floodwater on a major Birmingham road just hours after police issued a stark warning for drivers to stay away.
Police Warning Ignored by Drivers
The incident occurred on Yardley Green Road in Bordesley Green, near a bridge, which became impassable following hours of heavy overnight rain on Monday, December 1. West Midlands Police had explicitly advised the public to avoid the stretch due to what they described as "significant flooding."
Despite the warning, a driver in a BMW was captured navigating the substantial pool of water on Tuesday, December 2. In a contrasting display of caution, a private ambulance was photographed stopping short of the flooded section of the road, which is located close to Heartlands Hospital.
Drain Clearance Efforts Underway
Council workmen in high-visibility clothing were quickly deployed to the scene to tackle the cause of the flooding. They were seen on Tuesday working to unblock drains along the affected part of Yardley Green Road in an effort to clear the surface water.
The police alert was originally shared on social media platform X by Bordesley Green Police. Their post from Monday night read: "Please avoid the section Yardley Green Road by the bridge due to significant flooding."
Further Rain Forecast for Birmingham
The Met Office forecast suggests the region may not have seen the last of the wet weather. While Wednesday, December 3, is predicted to start dry with sunny spells, a band of rain is expected to move in overnight.
The outlook for the end of the week remains unsettled. The forecast for Thursday to Saturday indicates a dry start on Thursday before scattered showers return, with a mix of rain and showers likely to persist into the weekend.
This flooding incident follows other recent transport disruptions in the city, including a serious bus crash in Digbeth and a separate incident involving armed police and a Mercedes.
