Chancellor Rachel Reeves Calls on Drivers to Use Online Tools for Cheaper Fuel
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has urged motorists to utilise online tools to locate the most affordable fuel in their vicinity, stating that this approach could help drivers steer clear of being overcharged as pump prices persistently climb. The Government is actively promoting services that leverage data from its Fuel Finder scheme, enabling drivers to compare petrol and diesel prices at various forecourts before refuelling.
Sharp Increase in Fuel Prices Amid Global Disruptions
Fuel prices have experienced a significant surge in recent months, driven by disruptions to global oil shipping routes linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Concerns over tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to higher costs at the pump. According to RAC figures, the average price of a litre of diesel at UK forecourts on Monday reached 181.2p, marking a 27% increase from 142.4p on February 28, the day the conflict in the Middle East commenced. Similarly, average petrol prices have risen to 152.0p per litre, a 14% jump from 132.8p over the same timeframe.
Government Initiatives and Fuel Finder Database
Since February 2, all UK forecourts have been mandated to report price changes to the Government's Fuel Finder database within thirty minutes of any update. This data is subsequently utilised by numerous third-party applications and websites, allowing motorists to check local fuel prices and compare forecourts efficiently. The Government is anticipated to release a list of platforms that incorporate this information today, March 31. Existing services that assist drivers in comparing fuel costs include:
- Confused.com
- DriveScore
- Fuel Finder UK
- Fuel Spy
- MotorMouth
- PetrolPrices.com
- RAC Fuel Watch
Chancellor's Commitment to Protecting Family Finances
Ms Reeves emphasised her dedication to safeguarding family budgets and advocating for drivers, asserting that Fuel Finder empowers motorists by providing crucial information. She remarked, "My priority is protecting family finances and standing up for drivers - and Fuel Finder puts power back into their hands. By giving drivers the information they need to see where fuel is cheapest locally, they can avoid being overcharged and continue to fill up as normal." This initiative complements other measures implemented to alleviate household expenses, such as extending the 5p fuel duty cut until September, reducing energy bills by £117 from April, and offering targeted support for those facing elevated heating oil costs.
Fuel Duty Reduction and Industry Discussions
In her November 2025 Budget, Chancellor Reeves announced the extension of the fuel duty reduction—originally introduced by the Conservative government in March 2022—until the end of August 2026. Following this period, rates are projected to gradually revert to previous levels over the subsequent five years. However, mounting calls to abandon the planned increase have emerged due to escalating pump prices. Earlier this month, Ms Reeves informed petrol retailers during a Downing Street meeting that they share a shared obligation to maintain affordable prices for motorists.
This meeting occurred after criticism from the Petrol Retailers Association, which had threatened to withdraw from discussions with Ms Reeves and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. The association argued that the Government's inflammatory language regarding rising fuel prices had led to abuse directed at forecourt workers. Mr Miliband also cautioned executives from major operators, including Asda, BP, ExxonMobil, and Shell, that the Government would not tolerate unfair practices within the fuel industry.
