DVLA's Urgent 'You Must' Tax Warning: Thousands of Drivers at Risk
DVLA's urgent tax warning to thousands of UK drivers

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a stark and urgent warning to thousands of motorists across the UK, stressing that they must ensure their vehicle is taxed or face potential penalties. The agency delivered the critical update via its official account on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

What the DVLA's 'You Must' Warning Says

In a direct social media post, the DVLA stated: "You must tax your vehicle, even if you don't have to pay anything. Tax it online. #TaxItDontRiskIt." This reminder is crucial for all drivers, including those who are exempt from making a payment, such as individuals with disabilities. The agency emphasised that meeting this legal obligation is a prerequisite for driving on UK roads.

How to Tax Your Vehicle Correctly

To complete the process, you can tax your car, motorcycle, or other vehicle online using a reference number (REF). This number can be found in:

  • A recent vehicle tax reminder or ‘last chance’ warning letter from the DVLA.
  • Your vehicle log book (V5C), which must be in your name.
  • The green ‘new keeper’ slip from a log book if you’ve just purchased the vehicle.

The DVLA advises that if you lack these documents, you will need to apply for a new log book, but you can tax the vehicle simultaneously. Payments can be made by debit or credit card, or by setting up a Direct Debit.

Taxing Your Vehicle at the Post Office

For those preferring an in-person method, you can visit a Post Office that handles vehicle tax. You will need to take either payment details or your bank account information for a Direct Debit, unless your vehicle is exempt. Essential documentation includes your V5C log book or the new keeper slip.

You might also be required to show evidence of a valid MOT certificate. It is important to note that MOT information can take up to two days to update in the system, so you may not be able to tax your vehicle immediately after it passes its test.

This urgent call to action from the DVLA serves as a critical reminder for drivers to check their vehicle's tax status promptly to avoid fines and ensure they are driving legally.
