Eid Birmingham Parking Chaos as 30,000 Gather for Celebrations
Up to 30,000 people descended upon Birmingham on Friday, March 20, 2026, to participate in what organizers describe as one of the largest Eid gatherings in Europe. The massive Eid ul Fitr event, held at Small Heath Park and organized by Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre, featured prayers, a fairground, food, and various festivities.
Traffic Gridlock and Parking Mayhem
The influx of celebrants led to severe traffic congestion across the area, with motorists reportedly abandoning their cars on road sides and even in the middle of traffic islands in a desperate bid to reach the park on time. West Midlands Roads issued warnings about congestion impacting key routes, including the A45 Coventry Road and Golden Hillock Road, advising drivers to allow extra time and consider alternative paths.
Photos from the scene illustrate the chaotic parking situation, with vehicles left haphazardly near park entrances such as Wordsworth Road, Waverley Road, and Tennyson Road. Google Maps indicated that the typical three-mile journey from Birmingham city centre to Small Heath Park via Garrison Lane took significantly longer than usual due to the heavy traffic.
Transport Disruptions and Alternative Routes
Transport services were also affected, with videos showing a bus getting stuck at a T-junction amid long queues of traffic heading to the park for early morning prayers. The A45 Small Heath Highway experienced much heavier traffic than normal, and drivers were forced to perform U-turns to find alternative parking spots as the area became overwhelmed.
Authorities urged attendees to plan ahead and use public transport where possible to mitigate similar issues in future events. The celebrations, while a joyous occasion for the Muslim community, highlighted the challenges of managing large-scale gatherings in urban areas.
