Leicester City Council Deploys High-Tech CCTV Car to Combat Illegal Parking

Leicester City Council has launched a new enforcement initiative aimed at tackling poor parking across the city. The council will begin using a specially equipped CCTV vehicle to patrol streets and issue fines to drivers who violate parking regulations.

New £57,000 Vehicle to Patrol Midlands Streets

The Midlands local authority has invested £57,000 in a car fitted with advanced CCTV technology. This vehicle is designed to monitor and enforce parking restrictions in areas where persistent issues have been reported. Starting from the beginning of April, the car will be actively patrolling to catch motorists flouting rules.

Under the new enforcement measures, drivers caught parking illegally by the roving cameras will face fixed penalty notices of £70. In cases where parking restrictions are newly established, offenders may receive a warning notice instead of an immediate fine.

Targeting Dangerous Parking Hotspots

The deployment of the CCTV car comes in response to regular complaints about dangerous, inconsiderate, and illegal parking. Key areas of focus include locations outside schools, in bus lanes, and at bus stops. The vehicle will specifically monitor:

  • Zigzag markings on school streets
  • Red routes
  • Bus stop clearways

Illegal parking in these zones can pose significant safety risks, especially to children, and contribute to unnecessary traffic congestion.

Council Statements on Enforcement Strategy

Councillor Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for Environment and Transport, emphasized the council's duty to address dangerous parking. He stated, "Councils have a duty to tackle dangerous parking and are given powers to enforce parking restrictions by CCTV in areas where there are ongoing problems."

He further explained, "As part of this, we are introducing a new CCTV-equipped car to penalise and help address illegal parking in areas where there are persistent issues but no fixed camera enforcement." Whittle added that camera enforcement serves as an effective deterrent, sending a clear message that inconsiderate parking will not be tolerated, particularly in high-traffic areas frequented by children.

Funding and Future Operations

The purchase and ongoing maintenance costs of the £57,000 CCTV car will be covered entirely by income generated from parking fines. This self-funding model ensures that the enforcement initiative does not place additional financial burdens on council resources.

The vehicle is set to become a permanent fixture in Leicester's traffic management strategy, aiming to improve road safety and reduce congestion caused by illegal parking. The council hopes that this proactive approach will encourage better parking behavior among drivers and create safer environments for all road users.
