M6 Speed Cameras Capture 30,000 Motorists in West Midlands Hotspots
Approximately 30,000 drivers were caught by speed cameras at specific M6 junctions in the West Midlands last year, according to recent data analysis. The figures highlight persistent speeding issues on key stretches of the motorway, with many offences occurring under temporary smart motorway restrictions.
Major Hotspot Locations Identified
The data, obtained by BirminghamLive, pinpoints two primary locations where average speed cameras are most active. The worst offending section is between the M54 slip road near Wolverhampton and Junction 10 for Walsall, where 9,711 speeding drivers were captured travelling southbound up to November last year.
Another significant hotspot is between Junctions 7 and 8 near Great Barr, with 8,941 motorists caught speeding northbound. Additionally, drivers should exercise caution around Junctions 4 and 5 at Castle Bromwich, where 6,705 offences were recorded northbound and 2,631 southbound.
Smart Motorway Factors Contributing to Offences
Many of these speeding violations occur when temporary speed limits are implemented on smart motorway sections. Digital gantries frequently display reduced limits below the standard 70mph due to incidents, roadworks, or congestion, catching unaware drivers who fail to adjust their speed accordingly.
The high volume of fines underscores the effectiveness of average speed camera systems in monitoring compliance with variable speed limits designed to enhance safety and traffic flow on busy motorway corridors.
Motorists are advised to remain vigilant of changing speed limit displays and adhere to all posted restrictions to avoid penalties and contribute to safer driving conditions throughout the West Midlands motorway network.
