A man has been arrested in Germany following a serious incident where a car ploughed into a bus stop, leaving three people injured.
Details of the Giessen Incident
A 32-year-old man, originally from Azerbaijan but a resident of Giessen, was detained by police after the collision on Sunday, 22nd December. The incident occurred around 4:30 pm local time. According to authorities, the driver of an Audi was travelling along Westanlage towards Südanlage when the sequence of events began.
At the traffic lights at the intersection with Frankfurter Straße, the Audi first collided with two other vehicles travelling in the same direction. The driver then continued along Südanlage towards Goethestraße, where he crashed into the group of pedestrians waiting at a bus stop.
Police Response and Investigation
Following the impact at the bus stop, the driver continued driving along Goethestraße to Johannesstraße, where he finally stopped. He was subsequently arrested at that location. A significant police and rescue operation was swiftly launched at the scene near St John's Church.
A large area was cordoned off to allow for a thorough forensic investigation. Three individuals were injured in the crash, one of them seriously. All were treated at the scene by emergency services.
Ongoing Inquiry into the Crash
Police have stated that they are currently treating the event as an accident while their investigation continues. The exact circumstances that led the driver to collide with the two cars and then the bus stop remain unclear and are the primary focus of the ongoing probe.
