Man dies after A449 Stafford Road crash, driver arrested

A 62-year-old man has died following a collision with a car on a major Wolverhampton road early this morning.

Emergency Response at the Scene

The incident occurred on the A449 Stafford Road in Bushbury, near the junction with Bee Lane and Wobaston Road. Police and ambulance services were called to the scene at approximately 6.15am on Friday, January 10.

Members of the public rushed to aid the seriously injured pedestrian before paramedics arrived. Despite their combined efforts and those of the emergency medical teams, the man was pronounced dead at the location.

Driver Arrested and Road Closure

West Midlands Police confirmed that the pedestrian is believed to have been struck by a blue Volkswagen car. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene following the collision.

Officers subsequently arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs. He has been released from custody pending further investigation as enquiries continue.

The southbound section of the A449 was closed for around six hours to allow for forensic collision investigation work. The road re-opened just after 12pm.

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Sergeant Richard Evans from the force's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is leading the probe. He stated: "Our focus at this awful time, is to establish exactly what has happened, and to offer support."

He thanked the members of the public who assisted and emphasised the ongoing nature of the investigation: "We are continuing our enquiries to determine the full circumstances of this incident."

DS Evans highlighted the need for witnesses, noting: "This is a busy road into Wolverhampton city centre and we are asking anyone who was in the area at the time, who we have not yet spoken with, to get in contact with us."

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting witness interviews. They have issued a direct appeal for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact collision investigators.
