The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has identified a specific car brand as a growing target for thieves, issuing a security warning to owners. While overall vehicle crime has declined in the region, certain makes and models are seeing a sharp increase in thefts.
Mitsubishi thefts rise sharply
Simon Foster named Mitsubishi as a brand of concern after thefts surged by 64% in 2025, reaching 146 incidents. Although Mitsubishi ranks 14th overall in the region, it is one of only two brands in the top 15 to experience an increase. Toyota was the other, with thefts rising 7.6% to 1,099 cases, placing it second overall behind Ford.
Overall thefts down but vigilance needed
Vehicle crime across the West Midlands has fallen by 15.5% over the past two years. Ford remains the most stolen brand, particularly the Fiesta, but thefts of Ford vehicles have decreased. BMW, Nissan, and Mercedes round out the top five, all with fewer thefts than in 2024.
Foster said: "While there is still more work to do, I welcome this continued reduction in vehicle theft across the West Midlands. This progress reflects the determined action of West Midlands Police, working alongside partners and local communities, to tackle crime, target offenders and protect the public."
He added: "However, we cannot be complacent. While Ford vehicles remain the most stolen, we are seeing increases in other brands – particularly Mitsubishi – which is a clear reminder that criminals are constantly adapting. That is why I will continue to hold policing to account to tackle vehicle crime and call on vehicle manufacturers to continue to strengthen security measures, helping to better protect drivers and reduce opportunities for crime."
Advice for owners
Owners of Mitsubishi and Toyota vehicles are advised to take extra precautions, such as using steering locks, installing tracking devices, and parking in secure areas. The police urge all drivers to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
