Birmingham's A45 Speed Cameras: Calibration Underway for 30mph Enforcement
New A45 Speed Cameras Being Calibrated in Birmingham

New speed cameras installed along a key Birmingham dual carriageway are now undergoing final technical checks before they are switched on to enforce a lower speed limit.

Calibration Underway Ahead of Activation

Birmingham City Council has confirmed that a fleet of new speed cameras on the A45 Small Heath Highway is currently being calibrated. This essential process, which ensures the devices are accurate and legally compliant, is expected to take approximately one week to complete.

Once the calibration is finished, the cameras will be activated immediately. From that point, any driver caught exceeding the speed limit will face the standard penalties of a financial fine and penalty points on their licence.

Targeting a Notorious Stretch of Road

The cameras cover the stretch of the A45 from the junction with Bolton Road to Heybarnes Circus. This installation is a direct response to what the council describes as poor compliance with existing limits and a high number of collisions on this route.

The primary aim is to ensure motorists adhere to the 30mph speed limit now in force on this dual carriageway. Signs have been erected to alert all road users to the new enforcement measures and the mandatory lower speed.

Part of a Wider City Enforcement Operation

This new installation extends an existing speed enforcement operation that runs from Berkeley Road to Bordesley Middleway. The A45 scheme is one of half a dozen routes across Birmingham selected for extra enforcement measures to improve road safety.

The council has released the full list of locations for these new enforcement cameras:

  • A45 Coventry Road (extension of existing operation from Berkeley Road to Bordesley Middleway)
  • A47 Nechells/Fort Parkway (A4040 Ring-road to A452 Chester Road)
  • B4121 West Boulevard (Selcroft Avenue to California Way)
  • A34 Walsall Road (Wellinton Road to Newton Road/City Boundary)
  • B4114 Washwood Heath Road (Ward End Park Road to Bromford Lane)
  • A34 Stratford Road (Coniston Close to Robin Hood Lane)

A council spokeswoman emphasised that these steps are vital for enhancing safety on what is considered one of Birmingham's most notorious roads, where reducing speed is key to preventing serious accidents.
