UK Petrol Prices Hit Two-Year High as 'Unwelcome' Milestone Reached
Drivers across the United Kingdom are facing a significant financial burden as petrol prices have surged to their highest level in nearly two years. The RAC has issued a stark warning about this "unwelcome" milestone, which comes into effect from Friday, impacting millions of motorists.
Rising Fuel Costs and Easter Travel Concerns
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, highlighted that petrol has now broken through the 150p per litre barrier, reaching 150.11p. This price point has not been seen since mid-May two years ago, marking a troubling trend for consumers. Meanwhile, the average price of diesel is approaching 180p, currently standing at 177.68p.
With the long-awaited four-day Easter weekend approaching, the cost of traveling by car is set to be noticeably higher this year. Williams emphasized that drivers planning getaways should be prepared for increased expenses at the pump.
Motorway Services and Fuel Shopping Advice
Average prices at motorway services are even steeper, with unleaded petrol at 166p and diesel at 182p. This disparity means that drivers on long journeys will need to plan their refueling stops carefully to avoid overpaying.
The RAC's best advice remains for motorists to shop around for fuel and utilize free apps, such as myRAC, to ensure they never pay more than necessary. This proactive approach can help mitigate the impact of rising costs.
Broader Context and Economic Implications
This surge in fuel prices adds to the financial pressures faced by households, particularly during holiday periods when travel is common. The increase reflects broader economic factors, including global oil market fluctuations and geopolitical tensions.
As prices continue to climb, drivers are urged to stay informed and adopt cost-saving strategies to manage their transportation expenses effectively.
