RAC Issues Urgent Warning to Diesel Drivers Over 17p Per Litre Price Surge
The RAC has issued a critical warning to diesel drivers as fuel prices have skyrocketed by 17p per litre since the onset of the Middle East conflict, with the situation exacerbated by the ongoing US war with Iran. Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, highlighted the severe financial strain on households, particularly those reliant on vehicles for daily activities.
Sharp Increases in Fuel Costs
According to the RAC, the average price of unleaded petrol has risen by 6%, or nearly 8p, reaching 140.6p per litre, marking the highest level in 18 months. Diesel prices have seen an even more dramatic increase, surging by 12% or almost 17p to 159.2p per litre, a peak not observed since November 2023. This translates to filling a family car costing between £4 and £9 more than it did less than two weeks ago.
Williams expressed concern over the rapid impact on drivers, stating, "The fact the cost of a barrel of oil has exceeded $100 and wholesale fuel prices continue to rise is concerning, but it’s the speed at which drivers are feeling the effects which is under the spotlight now." He emphasized that drivers deserve fair treatment at the pumps, especially as prices continue to climb.
Government and Industry Response
In response to the escalating fuel costs, a meeting was held between fuel industry representatives and the government, including Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves. A Treasury spokesperson noted that attendees broadly agreed on the importance of transparency to help consumers find the cheapest prices through increased competition.
The spokesperson added, "The chancellor and energy secretary highlighted the government’s fuel finder rollout is being accelerated, with over 90% of the market now covered, and there was agreement that firms would provide more up-to-date information and pricing at more sites." This initiative aims to enable drivers to access real-time data on nearby fuel prices, facilitating more informed purchasing decisions.
