Toyota Recalls 144,200 Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Malfunction
Toyota has announced a significant recall impacting 144,200 vehicles in the United States due to a critical malfunction in the rearview camera system. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this issue may prevent the rear-view camera image from displaying properly when the vehicle is shifted into reverse gear.
Affected Models and Details
The recall specifically targets certain non-hybrid Lexus models, including the 2022–2025 NX250 and NX350, as well as the 2023–2026 RX350 and 2024–2026 TX350 vehicles. This widespread action underscores Toyota's commitment to addressing potential safety hazards promptly and ensuring customer protection.
Volkswagen's Separate Recall Announcement
In related automotive news, Volkswagen has also issued a recall for nearly 75,000 vehicles from its ID. series of electric vehicles. The concern revolves around the possibility of thermal overload in the battery, which could potentially lead to a fire in extreme situations.
Additionally, nearly 20,000 Cupra Born models manufactured between 2022 and 2024 are affected by this recall. A Volkswagen Group spokesperson emphasized that the risk of a dangerous fire is "very rare" and would only occur under "extreme situations."
The spokesperson further explained: "We have identified that in vehicles from the ID. series produced during a limited period, one of the modules in the high-voltage battery may not fully meet our technical specifications. As a result, there may be a reduction in electric driving range or the illumination of a yellow warning indicator in the vehicle."
Safety Implications and Industry Response
These recalls highlight ongoing challenges in automotive safety and technology integration. For Toyota, the rearview camera malfunction poses a direct risk to driver visibility and safety during reversing maneuvers, a critical function in modern vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems.
For Volkswagen, the battery issue raises concerns about the reliability and safety of electric vehicle components, particularly as the industry shifts toward electrification. Both companies are taking proactive steps to address these issues through recalls and customer notifications.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their local dealerships for inspection and necessary repairs. The NHTSA continues to monitor these recalls to ensure compliance and public safety.
