VED Doubles for 59 Popular Cars in the UK: Full List of Affected Vehicles
Car tax fees have more than doubled in just two years for almost 60 popular cars across the United Kingdom. This significant increase in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is set to impact a wide range of vehicles, from high-performance luxury models to more practical everyday cars.
Dramatic Rise in Car Tax Costs
Shahzad Sheikh, founder and presenter of the YouTube channel @BrownCarGuy, has highlighted that brand-new, highly polluting cars have experienced dramatic cost increases over a very short period. He explained: "Cars registered after 2017 that emit over 255g/km of CO2 will now attract a first-year VED rate of £5,690. That's a £200 inflation increase for 2026/27."
Sheikh emphasized that this comes on top of previous increases, effectively more than doubling the top rate compared to just a couple of years ago. "Around 60 cars now fall into this top band," he noted, adding that while it includes obvious high-performance vehicles, it also affects cars that were recently considered obtainable and practical.

Impact on Car Owners and the Market
This substantial increase in VED is expected to have a notable impact on car owners, particularly those with high-emission vehicles. The new rates reflect a growing emphasis on environmental considerations in vehicle taxation, targeting cars that contribute significantly to pollution levels.
Owners of these affected models should be prepared for higher running costs, which may influence future purchasing decisions and the overall market for high-performance and luxury vehicles in the UK.
