Major Volkswagen EV Recall Over Battery Safety Concerns

Volkswagen, the UK's best-selling car brand, has initiated an urgent recall affecting nearly 100,000 electric vehicles across Europe due to potentially dangerous battery faults. The automotive giant has identified the possibility of thermal overload in battery modules that could spark fires in extreme situations.

Scope of the Recall

The recall primarily impacts Volkswagen's ID series of electric vehicles, with approximately 75,000 ID models affected. Additionally, nearly 20,000 Cupra Born vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2024 are included in the safety campaign. In the UK specifically, the recall concerns 2,261 Volkswagen ID.3 Pro S models, representing less than five percent of ID.3 vehicles registered in the country.

Technical Details and Safety Reassurances

A Volkswagen Group spokesperson explained the technical issue: "We have identified that in vehicles from the ID. series produced during a limited period, one of the modules in the high-voltage battery may not fully meet our technical specifications. As a result, there may be a reduction in electric driving range or the illumination of a yellow warning indicator in the vehicle."

The company emphasized that the possibility of a dangerous fire breaking out remains "very rare" and would only occur in "extreme situations." No injuries have been reported related to the issues prompting this precautionary recall.

Remedial Actions and Customer Support

Volkswagen has implemented comprehensive measures to address the potential risks:

  • All affected vehicles will receive a software update at authorized Volkswagen service centers
  • The update enables detailed analysis of each battery module's condition
  • Any irregular modules identified will be replaced as a precautionary measure
  • All updates and replacements will be provided at no cost to customers

The Volkswagen Group is already contacting affected owners to arrange the necessary inspections and repairs. The company stated: "To eliminate any potential risks, we are taking precautionary measures to inspect all affected vehicles."

This recall represents one of the largest safety campaigns for electric vehicles in recent European automotive history, highlighting the ongoing challenges manufacturers face as they transition to electrified transportation systems.
