Met Office ice warning: West Midlands faces treacherous roads after snow
Yellow ice alert for West Midlands after snowfall

The West Midlands is facing a day of hazardous travel conditions after a major snowfall, with a Met Office yellow warning for ice remaining in force across the region.

Widespread ice risk follows snowfall

The alert, which was issued for Saturday, January 10, 2026, covers the entirety of the West Midlands, alongside parts of southern and northern England and much of Wales. It is scheduled to remain active until 12pm today.

The forecaster has warned that partially thawed snow from Friday has refrozen overnight as temperatures plunged below zero. This has created a widespread risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces.

A Met Office spokesperson explained the dangerous combination of factors: "Partially thawed snow during Friday will likely freeze overnight as temperatures fall below freezing, leading to a widespread ice risk."

Travel hazards for drivers and pedestrians

The conditions are expected to prove particularly treacherous for anyone travelling today. The Met Office has advised the public to anticipate icy patches on some roads, pavements and cycle paths.

There is also a warning that some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are likely. An additional hazard comes from the possibility of freezing fog patches in some areas, which could further reduce visibility and increase the ice risk.

The spokesperson added a note on further wintry weather: "Wintry showers will continue to feed into parts of Wales and southwest England at times, perhaps also into the West Midlands. Whilst there is some uncertainty as to the extent of any precipitation, this falling onto frozen surfaces may also add to the risk of ice."

Birmingham and region on alert

Birmingham and the surrounding West Midlands counties are squarely within the warning zone. The region is still dealing with the aftermath of Storm Goretti, which brought significant snowfall, pictured on streets in suburbs like Kings Heath.

Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution if they need to venture out, allowing extra time for journeys and taking care on footpaths. The situation is being closely monitored, with further travel updates expected throughout the day.
