Birmingham City will make tweaks to their squad in the summer transfer window as Chris Davies aims to increase Championship experience. After falling short of promotion last season, the Blues need quality additions. Here are seven free agents worth considering.
Illan Meslier
Position: Goalkeeper, Age: 26. The Leeds United goalkeeper is leaving after seven years, having won the Championship twice and made the Team of the Year in 2023/24. Despite high-profile errors and no game time this season, his metrics show he is a top Championship keeper. Blues need a new number one.
Josh Laurent
Position: Midfield, Age: 31. A powerful midfielder who excelled at Burnley, adding a promotion to his CV. Blues scouted him two years ago when he left Stoke City. His availability and ball-playing ability make him a strong option.
Dan Neil
Position: Midfield, Age: 24. The premium free agent, promoted with Sunderland and Ipswich Town. He contributes goals and orchestrates attacks. Expect a fight for his signature, with Ipswich possibly offering Premier League football.
Jairo Riedewald
Position: Midfield, Age: 29. Released by Sheffield United despite a one-year option. He impressed against Blues last season, with 20 starts and five sub appearances. Good on the ball, tactically astute, and physical enough for the Championship.
Conor Chaplin
Position: Forward, Age: 29. After a stellar 2023/24 with Ipswich (13 goals, 8 assists), he struggled on loan at Portsmouth (2 goals in 37 games). Similar to Jay Stansfield, Blues may prefer a creative number 10 instead.
Josh Maja
Position: Striker, Age: 27. West Brom are in talks but no guarantee. He scored 12 in 26 in 2024/25 but only 4 last season, mostly as a sub. Blues have been linked before.
Callum Wilson
Position: Striker, Age: 34. The England international can still score, as shown at West Ham this season. He has verbally agreed a new contract but could be available if not signed.
