A Midlands police officer has been dismissed after failing to declare financial difficulties during his vetting review. PC Joseph Whant, who served with Nottinghamshire Police, experienced financial hardship during the Covid pandemic but did not disclose his debts, believing they were manageable.
At a gross misconduct hearing on April 20, a panel found that Whant breached policing standards of honesty and integrity, duties and responsibilities, and discreditable conduct. He was subsequently dismissed and placed on the police barred list.
Whant told the hearing that his outstanding debts have now been paid off and he is currently financially stable. He stated that he did not consider the debts to be unmanageable, which is why he omitted them from his vetting review.
The investigation was launched by Nottinghamshire Police's professional standards directorate after the omission came to light. Deputy Chief Constable Rob Griffin emphasized the importance of honesty during vetting processes, stating: "It is vitally important that officers and police staff are honest and transparent during these reviews. This officer failed to provide important details about his financial situation, despite it being very clear that these details needed to be declared."
Griffin added: "The outcome is an important reminder for all officers and staff across our organisation to ensure they are open and transparent during these reviews. We have stringent processes in place to ensure that anyone who fails to declare matters are dealt with robustly."
