Employees at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Sutton Coldfield recently enjoyed a special day of celebration, sharing their workplace with friends and family.
A Day of Festivities and Behind-the-Scenes Access
The site's Reliability & Maintenance Engineering (RME) team was at the heart of the event, which was designed to honour their crucial work. Colleagues and their loved ones were treated to a day packed with activities, entertainment, and food.
One of the main highlights was a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. Guests were given a unique look at the inner workings of the Amazon site, including hands-on engineering activities and demonstrations of the advanced Amazon Robotics and packing systems.
Recognising Essential Contributions
Tom Byford, an RME team member who organised the fun day, expressed his pride in the event. "I feel really grateful to have been chosen to organise this year’s event," he said. "Seeing our family, friends, and co-workers enjoy the tour and learn more about how we keep each other safe made it all worthwhile."
Lisa Swan, the General Manager at Amazon in Sutton Coldfield, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of the RME team's role. "Our RME family fun day was a wonderful way to bring our team and their loved ones together, celebrate their achievements and show our appreciation for them," she stated. "The work the RME team does is essential to our operations."
Amazon's Broader Community Support
This event is part of a wider pattern of community engagement from the retail giant. Amazon is deeply involved in supporting communities across the UK through various initiatives.
Notably, the company co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. This project has donated more than 12 million surplus goods to over 800,000 families in need across Scotland, Wales, Greater Manchester, London, Tees Valley, and Birmingham. This year, the initiative is set to send a staggering 1 million orders to families throughout the UK.
Further community programmes include:
- Amazon Future Engineer, which has supported over one million UK students with free STEM education.
- A pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good, which helps community organisations transport meals and essentials.
- A partnership with Comic Relief, where Amazon is the official home of the Red Nose, having raised over £4.8 million for charitable projects.
The family fun day successfully highlighted not only the vital work of the engineering teams but also the company's integrated approach to corporate social responsibility and employee appreciation.
