King Edward VI School in Stratford-upon-Avon has been named the best secondary school in the Midlands in a new league table published by The Telegraph. The prestigious grammar school ranked 18th nationally, based on factors including exam performance and attendance.
School's Continued Excellence
This latest accolade cements the school's status among the top institutions in the UK. It follows the school being named the best in the region in the respected Sunday Times Parent Power Guide. King Edward VI School is a grammar school, meaning pupils must pass an exam to secure a place. As a result, it attracts some of the brightest children from the region and beyond, often from wealthier backgrounds, though the school does not charge fees.
Historic Reputation and Ofsted Rating
The historic school has a long-standing reputation as one of the country's best, famously counting William Shakespeare as a former pupil. Ofsted graded it 'outstanding' in all areas at its last inspection in November 2021, achieving a perfect score. Inspectors said at the time: "King Edward VI school is a rich and vibrant community. Pupils thrive at this school. Staff expect pupils to be the very best that they can be. Pupils rise enthusiastically to this challenge. They relish learning and grasp every opportunity to learn something new. Classrooms are places where pupils think hard."
