Family-run civil engineering and construction specialist Andrew Scott has announced a significant boost in profitability, with its latest financial results painting a picture of robust health and strong future prospects.
Strong Financial Performance Amid Market Challenges
For the financial year ending June 2025, the Swansea-based company saw its pre-tax profit climb to £7m, a notable increase from the £5.2m recorded the previous year. While turnover experienced a slight dip to £79.6m from £84m in 2024, this was attributed to the timing of major orders and two-stage tender outcomes. The firm is forecasting a dramatic surge in revenue for its current financial year, with turnover expected to swell to around £120m.
This optimistic outlook is firmly underpinned by a formidable secured order book valued at £240m, of which £130m has been carried over from the previous year. This strong pipeline of work has also bolstered the company's cash reserves, with bank balances rising to £15.15m, up from £10.34m in 2024, even after capital expenditure exceeding £2.5m.
Strategic Wins and Workforce Expansion
Andrew Scott's success has been driven by a series of high-profile contract wins across Wales. Key projects secured in the last year include:
- The refurbishment of Cardiff City Hall.
- The Grand Pavilion development in Porthcawl.
- The Lower Swansea Valley Heritage project.
- Two enabling work schemes for Tata Steel's new £1.2bn electric arc furnace in Port Talbot.
The company's growth is reflected in its expanding team. Direct employment has risen from 234 to 271 staff, with an additional 500 people employed within its local supply chain. Managing director Mark Bowen credited the firm's resilience to its strategic approach and dedicated workforce.
"Our ability to maintain profitability in a difficult market demonstrates the strength of our business, the resilience of our staff and workforce and the quality of our project pipeline," said Bowen.
Foundations for Future Growth
As the business, which was founded in 1870, enters the final year of its current five-year strategic plan, it is on track to exceed its revenue and profit targets. It is now developing a new plan to guide its next phase. The firm has reinforced its market position by securing places on all five Welsh procurement frameworks, including the NHS Building for Wales 2 framework, and the National Grid framework for the next four years.
Chairman Andrew Hoppé highlighted the company's focus on efficiency and its people as key drivers. "We consider our very low staff turnover and direct workforce have again been a key driver in our success," he stated. "This firm foundation has given us positive momentum... the company is well positioned to achieve sustainable profitable growth and look forward to the future with confidence."
With a diverse portfolio spanning education, health, commercial, logistics, energy, and advanced manufacturing, Andrew Scott is positioning itself as a leading force in the UK's civil engineering and construction sector.
