Barnardo's Confirms 45 Store Closures Amid Online Competition
Barnardo's Closes 45 Stores as Online Rivals Hit Sales

Barnardo's, one of the UK's major charity chains, has confirmed the closure of 45 stores last year, with four more locations set to shut down later this month. The closures come as the charity battles increasing competition from online platforms selling pre-loved clothing.

Recent and Upcoming Closures

Several stores have already closed this month, including locations in Newton Aycliffe, Durham, and Kirkham, Lancashire. The Bishop's Stortford store is scheduled to close on Sunday, May 24, and the Central Six Retail Park location in Coventry will also shut its doors before the end of May.

Impact of Online Rivals

Mark Gregory, managing director of Barnardo's, stated: “As well as this, the rise in online platforms selling pre-loved clothing has impacted on the income of charity shops.” He explained that the charity regularly reviews store performance and makes difficult decisions to close underperforming locations that do not generate a positive contribution to its work with children, young people, and families across the UK.

“Last year, in 2024/2025, we closed stores in 45 locations as unfortunately they were not generating enough income towards the charity,” Gregory added.

Community Reaction

The closure of the Chippenham store on May 2 drew emotional responses from customers. One said: “So, so sad, best charity shop around with the best friendly staff, will be very much missed.” Another added: “I’m gutted it’s closed down, the community will miss you.”

Barnardo's ongoing programme of review will continue in the year ahead, potentially leading to further closures if stores fail to meet income targets.
