In a significant move within the sports media landscape, the broadcasting powerhouse Global has acquired a controlling stake in The Overlap, the media business founded by former footballer and pundit Gary Neville.

The Deal and Its Structure

The transaction, confirmed in early January 2026, sees Global secure majority ownership of the venture, which Neville launched back in 2021. The deal marks the exit of the previous majority stakeholder, the Miroma Group. Financial details were not fully disclosed, but company filings for the period ending 30 June 2024 showed The Overlap Limited had net assets of £406,000. Several changes to significant ownership were recorded in December 2025.

Gary Neville expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating the strategic investment process had led them to the "perfect partner." He highlighted the ambition to create '"The Overlap Network"' with Global's backing, aiming to evolve into a world-leading football and sports media platform.

Leadership and Strategic Vision

As part of the new structure, Gary Neville will assume the role of co-chair within Global, working alongside Global Group's chief executive, Simon Pitts, who will serve as his co-chair. Day-to-day leadership will be handled by former Sky Sports producer Scott Melvin, who takes up the position of lead executive director.

This move comes shortly after Neville, alongside David Beckham, divested part of his stake in Salford City FC, indicating a strategic shift in his business focus. Global stated it will leverage its extensive platforms, marketing power, and digital advertising exchange (DAX) to fuel The Overlap's growth, from content distribution to data-driven ad sales.

Content and Market Position

The Overlap is best known for its flagship video series, Stick to Football, which features a star-studded line-up including Neville, Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Ian Wright, and Jill Scott. The brand has successfully capitalised on demand for fresh, non-traditional sports content, amassing over 38 million monthly views on YouTube.

It has also expanded into other sports with offshoot series covering rugby union and cricket. The Overlap operates in a space similar to Gary Lineker's Goalhanger firm, which recently signed a deal with Netflix to co-produce a podcast during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Global's acquisition is a clear statement of intent to develop a "network of video-led media brands in football and other sports," directly competing in the fast-growing digital sports content arena.
