Monzo Digital Bank Launches Mobile Network with Loyalty Discounts

A digital bank is expanding into the mobile phone market with an innovative new service. The Monzo network intends to reward loyal users by gradually lowering their monthly bills.

Existing digital bank account holders can now register their interest online for the service, which piggybacks on the Virgin Media O2 network. A full public release is scheduled for later this summer. The launch is expected to significantly intensify competition among established network providers. Traditional companies are already facing increased market pressure from digital rivals such as Revolut and Klarna.

Monzo's Strategy

Monzo, which now serves more than 15 million users, claims its strategy transforms standard industry practices. Instead of penalising customers for staying put, the system rewards long-term commitment. Subscribers can secure a 5% discount every 12 months, which builds to a maximum saving of 30%. There are three digital SIM packages available, each with a different data tier priced at £8, £12 or £20 monthly.

Consumer Protections

Tight rules introduced after 2025 stopped telecom corporations from implementing unannounced mid-term price increases. Despite this, some businesses have faced backlash for raising contract rates in line with inflation, prompting Chancellor Rachel Reeves to write to executives last year, demanding greater consumer protections. Monzo claims it will address these common grievances by offering flexible agreements with no fixed contracts or cancellation penalties. Even so, this setup does not entirely rule out the possibility that the firm will adjust its base pricing structure in the future.

Market Context

Only four major corporations operate their own physical masts across the UK: EE, Virgin Media O2, Vodafone and Three. Smaller firms, such as Monzo, are often referred to as MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators). They lease the infrastructure to run their digital networks. In a similar move, financial competitor Revolut introduced its own mobile package earlier this year using the Vodafone network. That specific deal provides unlimited data, minutes and messages across the country for a flat fee of £12.50 each month.
