Aldi Announces Major Pay Rise for Midlands Store Workers from April 1
Thousands of Aldi store employees across the Midlands are set to receive a substantial pay increase starting April 1, as the supermarket chain reinforces its commitment to being the UK's best-paying retailer.
New Hourly Rates and Benefits
From April 1, store assistants in the West Midlands will see their hourly wage rise to £13.50 per hour, with potential increases up to £14.47 per hour based on length of service. This adjustment marks the second pay rise for Aldi staff this year, following an earlier announcement in January that included enhanced rates and extended maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay.
The pay rise is expected to benefit more than 28,000 hourly-paid store colleagues across the region, representing a total investment of £42 million in employee compensation. Aldi emphasizes that these new rates exceed those offered by all competitor supermarkets, solidifying its leadership in sector pay.
Exclusive Paid Breaks and Employee Recognition
Aldi highlights that it remains the only major supermarket to provide paid breaks to all staff, a benefit valued at approximately £1,500 per year for the average store employee. This perk, combined with the pay increase, underscores the company's focus on rewarding its workforce.
Giles Hurley, Aldi's Chief Executive, stated, "Our colleagues work incredibly hard to deliver exceptional value for our customers, and we're rewarding that dedication with the highest pay in the sector. We've invested over £42 million in colleague pay this year because we know that every single member of Team Aldi is fundamental to our success and deserve nothing less."
Aldi's Broader Investment and Expansion Plans
Beyond employee compensation, Aldi is pursuing significant growth initiatives. The company employs more than 45,000 staff nationwide and plans to open 40 new stores in 2026 as part of a £370 million investment programme. Additionally, Aldi is allocating an extra £300 million to upgrade and extend existing stores, reflecting its commitment to expansion and modernization.
This pay rise announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by Aldi to attract and retain talent in a competitive retail market, while also supporting economic growth in the Midlands through job creation and enhanced wages.
