Aldi's £28 Weekly Paid Breaks Lead UK Supermarkets

Aldi Stands Alone as UK's Only Supermarket Offering Paid Breaks

Aldi has solidified its position as the only major UK supermarket to provide paid breaks for all staff members, a benefit valued at approximately £28 per week or £1,500 annually for the average store colleague. This initiative underscores the retailer's commitment to being the sector's leader in employee compensation and welfare.

Pay Increases and Investment in Birmingham and Beyond

In a significant move, Aldi has announced pay rises for its workforce, with Store Assistants in Warwickshire and the West Midlands conurbation, including Birmingham, seeing their starting pay increase to £13.50 per hour from 1st April. Higher rates of £14.47 per hour are available based on length of service, benefiting over 28,000 hourly-paid store colleagues across the UK.

This pay adjustment is part of a £42 million investment in colleague pay for 2026, marking the second pay rise for Aldi teams this year. Earlier in January, the supermarket enhanced rates and extended maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay, further demonstrating its dedication to staff well-being.

Leadership and Expansion Plans

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the company's approach, stating, "Our colleagues work incredibly hard to deliver exceptional value for our customers, and we're rewarding that dedication with the highest pay in the sector. We've invested over £42 million in colleague pay this year because we know that every single member of Team Aldi is fundamental to our success and deserve nothing less."

Aldi employs more than 45,000 colleagues nationwide and continues its rapid expansion with plans to open 40 new stores in 2026 as part of a £370 million investment programme. Additionally, the supermarket is investing an extra £300 million in upgrading and extending existing stores, reinforcing its status as one of Britain's fastest-growing food retailers.

The combination of paid breaks and competitive pay rates positions Aldi ahead of all other competitors in the supermarket industry, highlighting its comprehensive strategy to value and retain its workforce.
