Barclays Introduces New £300 Daily Cash Withdrawal Limit for Personal Accounts

Barclays customers with personal current accounts are now subject to a £300 daily limit for cash withdrawals. This significant change affects account holders across the UK, including those in Birmingham where the banking giant maintains a branch network.

Over-the-Counter Withdrawals Still Available for Large Amounts

Despite the new daily limit, Barclays confirms that customers can still withdraw larger amounts of cash over the counter at their branches. This service operates Monday through Friday, with no counter service available on Saturdays at any location.

There is no maximum limit to how much money customers can withdraw over the counter, provided they have sufficient funds in their accounts. However, the bank has implemented additional security measures for these transactions.

Enhanced Security Measures and Fraud Prevention

Barclays states: "Because we want to protect you from fraud and have a legal obligation to prevent crime, when you visit one of our branches to withdraw large amounts of cash, we may ask for a form of ID, such as a driving licence or passport."

The bank may also require customers to answer questions about the purpose of large cash withdrawals. Barclays strongly advises against leaving branches with substantial amounts of cash, recommending electronic payment methods instead.

"It would be better to avoid leaving one of our branches with large amounts of money. If you can, make any payments through Online Banking, using our app or by making a transfer in a branch," the bank advises.

Account-Specific Withdrawal Limits

The new withdrawal structure varies by account type:

  • Personal Current Accounts: Maximum £300 daily withdrawal, with adjustable limits ranging from £0 to £500
  • Premier Customers: Maximum £1,000 daily withdrawal, with adjustable limits from £0 to £2,000
  • Business Accounts: Maximum £750 daily withdrawal, with no option to change this limit

Cash Machine Withdrawals and Alternative Options

Customers can withdraw cash from any ATM displaying the Visa or Plus logo using their debit cards. Those with cash cards must use Barclays or LINK cash machines specifically.

Some cash machines may impose additional fees or withdrawal limits. For large amounts, customers might need to complete multiple transactions, including at Post Office counters and shop checkouts.

For those needing substantial cash amounts, Barclays branches offer the option to withdraw the entire amount in one transaction at self-service machines or over the counter during business hours.

This policy change reflects Barclays' ongoing efforts to balance customer convenience with enhanced security measures and fraud prevention protocols in an increasingly digital banking environment.
