British Gas Issues £571 Bill for Unoccupied Property
A perplexed customer has been slapped with a £571 bill from British Gas for a flat they have never owned or occupied, leading them to seek assistance from a national newspaper. The individual contacted The Guardian, detailing how British Gas opened an account in their name for an address they have never lived at and subsequently demanded payment.
The customer explained: "British Gas opened an account in my name for an address that I have never occupied, and sent me a £571 bill. It declined to open a complaint because I 'refused' to provide a tenancy agreement or mortgage statement, which I don't have since I've long since paid off my mortgage. It is now threatening me with a debt collection agency." Notably, the customer is actually an Octopus Energy client, adding to the confusion.
Guardian Intervention Reveals Address Similarity Issue
After The Guardian stepped in, it was discovered that the mix-up stemmed from the customer's address being similar to the flat in debt. This case highlights potential pitfalls in billing systems where minor address discrepancies can lead to significant errors affecting innocent consumers.
Centrica Announces Clean Energy Collaboration Amid Grid Challenges
In unrelated news, Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, has partnered with Ceres, a UK-based clean energy technology leader, to accelerate the deployment of solid oxide on-site power solutions. This collaboration aims to meet multi-gigawatt demand from commercial and industrial customers across the UK and Europe, addressing electricity grid connection delays that are impacting new projects.
Chris O’Shea, Chief Executive of Centrica plc, stated: "Businesses across the UK and Europe need more power, and they need it faster than the electricity grids can deliver. This partnership is about offering customers a reliable, efficient source of on-site power that can be up and running quickly. By combining Ceres’ technology with our energy expertise, we see a real opportunity to support data centres, AI and industry with cleaner power at scale, while helping to ease pressure on the grid and boost economic growth."
The initiative focuses on providing high-efficiency, low-carbon, grid-independent power solutions that can be deployed more rapidly than traditional options like gas turbines or nuclear, amidst a widening gap between energy demand and available capacity in the region.
