British Gas, EDF, EON, OVO and Octopus Energy customers could save up to £230 on their energy bills by implementing what experts call "small changes." Gordon Wallis from Your NRG has outlined a series of practical measures that can reduce costs for households supplied by these major energy providers.
Bubble Wrap on Windows
One of the most effective methods involves applying bubble wrap to windows. This technique is particularly beneficial in older properties with single glazing. "A layer of trapped air can reduce heat loss significantly, especially in properties with single glazing," Wallis explained.
Microwave Over Oven
Choosing a microwave instead of a conventional oven when preparing smaller meals can save more than £100 annually. "Cooking smarter is one of the easiest wins. You are using less energy for the same result," the expert noted.
Turn Off Boiler Preheat
Many combi boilers have a preheat function that keeps hot water ready throughout the day. Disabling this feature alone can save around £100 per year, according to Mr. Wallis.
Optimise Tumble Drying
Placing a dry towel inside the tumble dryer speeds up the drying process, while wool dryer balls improve airflow. "These simple adjustments reduce how long appliances need to run, which directly lowers your energy use," the expert added.
Switch Off Router at Night
Even switching off your internet router overnight can lead to savings of £20 to £30 annually, Mr. Wallis said.
Energy Price Cap Update
The energy price cap, which sets the maximum amount suppliers can charge per unit of energy and standing charge for standard variable tariffs, is currently £1,641 per year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by direct debit. This applies from April 1 to June 30, 2026, representing a 6.6% decrease from the previous cap of £1,758 (January 1 to March 31, 2026). The cap is based on typical household energy use.
Wallis also encouraged consumers to check for unclaimed financial support: "There is financial support available that many people never claim. It is always worth checking what help you might be entitled to."
