Energy customers could claim £126 refund before Christmas
Check for £126 energy refund if you moved house

Energy customers across Britain are being urged to check if they are due refunds worth an average of £126, following a major announcement from industry regulator Ofgem.

The call to action targets anyone who has relocated within the past five years and may have left credit behind in closed energy accounts.

Millions in unclaimed energy credit

According to Ofgem, a staggering £240 million remains unclaimed in credit balances from accounts that have been closed. This money belongs to consumers who switched suppliers after moving house but did not provide updated contact details for their final bill.

Tim Jarvis, Ofgem's Director General for Retail, acknowledged the administrative burden of moving. "Moving house requires a lot of life admin – and it’s understandable that some things will be missed," he stated.

He emphasised the scale of the issue, noting that almost two million closed accounts are currently holding credit. His message was clear: "If you’ve moved in the last five years, reach out to your old supplier, provide them with the correct information, and you could be due a refund."

How to claim your money

Major suppliers including British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON, and Octopus are involved in the effort to return these funds. Ofgem has established rules that incentivise suppliers to return money when accounts are closed.

However, companies often face a significant hurdle. "Without the right contact details, they’re stuck," Jarvis explained. This is why the regulator is launching a public awareness campaign to reconnect people with their money.

Ed Rees, Energy UK’s Head of Retail Policy, echoed this sentiment, encouraging customers to get in touch. "There are a range of easy ways to get in touch, including email and webchat, and we’d encourage customers to contact their supplier if they need help or advice."

Practical steps for consumers

For those planning a future move, Rees offered crucial advice: "Remember to keep your direct debit active until your final bill has been settled to avoid leaving money unclaimed."

The key takeaway for millions of Britons is simple: search your old emails for correspondence from past energy suppliers. If you find any final bills or account closure notices, contact the supplier immediately. You could be pleasantly surprised with a refund just in time for the festive season.
