Santander Announces Closure of 27 UK Branches in May 2026
Santander is set to close 27 branches across the United Kingdom in May 2026, with four of these locations situated in the West Midlands region. This move is part of a larger strategy by the banking giant to reduce its physical high street presence, as it accelerates the transition toward digital banking services to meet evolving customer preferences.
Digital Shift Drives Branch Reductions
In January 2026, Santander revealed plans to decrease its branch network by a total of 44 locations, including four branches that were shuttered earlier in the year. A spokesperson for Santander UK explained, "In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers."
The bank emphasized its commitment to maintaining a diverse branch network, which includes full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and Work Cafés. Simultaneously, Santander is investing heavily in digital banking services to ensure customers have flexible options for managing their finances.
