Spring Financial Switches Could Save UK Households Over £800 Annually

A recent study commissioned by Smart Energy GB has found that households across the UK could save more than £800 per year by implementing six straightforward financial adjustments this spring. The research, which surveyed 2,000 adults, highlights the crucial role of designated 'bills bosses' in managing family finances.

The Role of the 'Bills Boss' in Household Finances

According to the findings, 65 per cent of families have a specific member who takes charge of financial responsibilities. This individual typically negotiates better deals, ensures optimal savings, and oversees all monetary matters. Many respondents believe that having one person in this role helps avoid confusion (44 per cent), missed payments (32 per cent), and duplicated spending (24 per cent).

Victoria Bacon, director at Smart Energy GB, commented on the significance of these efforts. "Our research celebrates the bills bosses this spring - the people who go the extra mile for their households to make savvy savings," she said. "Even small swaps at home can make a difference, and getting a smart meter is an easy way to have clear oversight of your energy use, helping you find ways to save money on your bills."

Popular Strategies for Household Savings

The study identified several effective methods for reducing expenses. Among the most popular tactics are:

  • Cancelling unused subscriptions (47 per cent)
  • Searching for new insurance policies (44 per cent)
  • Tracking energy use with a smart meter display (22 per cent)

Of those who identify as the household financial expert, 33 per cent actively enjoy hunting down savings through clever financial switches, while 62 per cent are willing to shop around to cut costs. Additionally, 84 per cent agree that the work done by the bills boss is 'invaluable', though 35 per cent of those in this role feel they do not receive enough credit from other household members.

Spring Cleaning Finances in 2026

Exactly half of all respondents plan to 'spring clean' their finances in 2026, with 60 per cent stating that the change in season motivates them to declutter not only their homes but also their financial affairs. On average, individuals aim to make three financial changes during this period, hoping to save approximately £116 in total.

When it comes to energy bills, 59 per cent of smart meter owners agree that the device encourages their household to be more energy efficient, with 62 per cent reporting actual savings as a result. Smart meter users estimate that their devices help them save around £130 annually on average.

Expert Insights and Practical Tips

Smart Energy GB has collaborated with journalist and broadcaster Kate Thornton, who describes herself as a bills boss, to assist Brits in navigating their financial spring clean. "I'll happily admit I'm the bills boss in my house and I'm always on the lookout for smarter ways to save money," said Thornton. "It might not sound glamorous, but getting on top of your household bills can make a real difference, as can teaching your family the tips and tricks, too."

Professor John Gathergood, an economics expert at the University of Nottingham, partnered with Smart Energy GB to calculate the potential savings. The six simple swaps that could lead to significant financial benefits include:

  1. Track energy usage and use energy flexibly with a smart meter (£10.83 per month/£130 per year)
  2. Lower the thermostat by 1 degree (£7.50 per month/£90 per year)
  3. Cancel unused subscriptions (£20 per month/£240 per year)
  4. Shop around for insurance (£10 per month/£120 per year)
  5. Switch broadband provider (£12.50 per month/£150 per year)
  6. Review mobile phone contract (£8 per month/£96 per year)

By adopting these strategies, households can potentially save over £800 annually, making spring an ideal time for financial rejuvenation and smarter money management.
