A visit to a top European beach resort doesn't have to break the bank, as one traveller discovered on a trip to the sun-drenched south of Lanzarote. Dean Mellor found the four-star Barceló Playa Blanca resort delivered a five-star experience at a surprisingly affordable price, perfect for a relaxing winter escape.
A Resort Designed for Relaxation and Indulgence
The experience began in the hotel's spa, where a hydrotherapy circuit featuring a cascading 'swan faucet' helped melt away any pre-holiday stress. The resort itself, less than two years old, impressed with its elegant design blending clean white stucco with laser-cut volcanic brickwork, all set amongst cacti and saw-toothed rock borders.
Mellor stayed in the adults-only Royal Level annexe, which boasts a heated 50-metre infinity pool, a bar, and the Magical restaurant, all overlooking the Atlantic strait between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Dining here was a highlight, with breakfast offering an "eye-watering" array of Canarian delicacies like Iberico ham and local cheeses alongside classic cooked options.
All-Inclusive Excellence and Extensive Facilities
The all-inclusive package proved exceptional value. Lunch and dinner combined waiter service with extensive buffet options, featuring local specialities such as papas arrugadas with mojo sauces. A good selection of wines was included, with premium options available for a supplement. Evening entertainment included live music during dinner.
For families, the separate Family Level features a colossal pool and its own Atlantic buffet restaurant. The room was spacious and tech-savvy, with a king-size bed, walk-in shower, and a balcony with sea views. UK television channels were a welcome touch for keeping up with home news.
Entertainment across the resort was vast, ranging from flamenco and magic shows in the main theatre to a saxophonist by the pool. The resort also houses the popular Champs sports bar and two speciality à la carte restaurants: México Lindo and the Japanese-themed Koi. Guests on all-inclusive stays of over five days receive a complimentary voucher to dine at one.
Exploring Beyond the Resort Gates
The location offers easy access to local attractions. Two gates lead to a shore promenade, with a picturesque marina hosting weekly markets to the left. A 10-15 minute walk to the right leads to a beautiful sandy beach at the main Playa Blanca town, which is filled with shops and restaurants.
For the active, the resort provides tennis courts, a full gym, and the spa circuit, available for just 20 euros. A dedicated animation team runs daily activities like aqua aerobics and yoga. Jet2holidays, the tour operator, offers various excursions, including a North Island tour (€85) and catamaran sailing (€51).
Jet2holidays offers a seven-night half-board package from Manchester on 13 January 2026 for £969 per person, including 22kg baggage and transfers. An all-inclusive package for the same dates costs £1,199 per person. The report also highlighted the convenience of booking airport parking and hotels via Holiday Extras and starting the journey in style at Manchester Airport's Escape Lounges from £35.99.
