New Birmingham Landlord Continues Legendary Grandfather's Pub Legacy
A new landlord in Birmingham is set to continue a family tradition that has left a lasting mark on the city's Irish community. Matthew Clifford will follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, the late Brendan Breslin, who was hailed as a legendary figure after his death in 2008.
Honoring a Community Icon
Brendan Breslin, who passed away in 2008, was celebrated by the Birmingham Mail for changing the face of the local community. He operated multiple pubs across Birmingham, including the well-known Royal George, and founded the Birmingham Irish Amateur Boxing Club, leaving an indelible legacy.
Now, his grandson Matthew Clifford is stepping up to carry on this heritage. Matthew will run Clancy's, a new Irish bar located on Harborne High Street, marking his first venture as a landlord.
A Dream Realized
In an interview, Matthew expressed his long-held ambition: "I've wanted to run my own pub ever since I can remember. I get on with people and think I'll be a friendly landlord. It's just taken being at the right age and able to afford it."
He outlined his plans to attract regulars, emphasizing their importance: "My focus now is bringing some of the old drinkers back because regulars are your bread and butter. We'd even be looking to open as early as 9am because elderly people tend to start drinking earlier."
Family Reflections and Future Vision
Matthew's mother, Marie Breslin, shared insights into her father's impact: "My dad ran no-nonsense boozers which wouldn't give anyone trouble. If people arrived drunk, you wouldn't be allowed in and he commanded respect. I was his right-hand woman in his pubs and felt it was the good old days."
She highlighted the goal for Clancy's: "We want Clancy's to be a pub back like old times, before the pandemic. People have stopped drinking and tend to stay in, we want a reason to get them out. Clancy's will be a bit of everything where you can have a pint, enjoy the sports and eat great food. How lovely would it be to get that tradition back again in Birmingham."
Opening Details
Clancy's is scheduled to open on March 6 and is located at 152 High Street, Harborne, B17 9PN. This new establishment aims to revive the communal spirit and traditions that Brendan Breslin championed, offering a welcoming space for pints, sports, and quality food.
