A cherished Birmingham cafe is set to serve its final meals this weekend following the heartbreaking death of its co-owner.
A Dream Cut Short
The Old Dresser Cafe on Bearwood Road, near Smethwick, will close its doors for good on Sunday, November 23. This difficult decision comes nearly a month after the passing of co-owner Richard Strugala, who died from cancer on October 24, 2025, at the age of 52.
In a poignant statement, Robert Zdrojek, 58, Richard's husband and business partner, explained that the establishment would not be the same without the man who was its heart and soul. The cafe had been Richard's dream project for eight years, a venture into which he poured immense passion and dedication.
A Community Favourite
The cafe had earned a stellar reputation among locals and visitors alike. It was particularly noted for its menu featuring both British and Polish cuisine at reasonable prices, creating a unique and welcoming dining experience.
Its quality was formally recognised with a Certificate of Excellence on Tripadvisor, as well as a Travellers' Choice Award. The business also boasted a impressive five-star rating on the travel platform, cementing its status as a local gem.
An Emotional Farewell
On its Facebook page, a message from Robert conveyed the profound sense of loss felt by those left behind. "I'm heartbroken by his loss and want to express my sincere gratitude for the years of support and loyalty from our wonderful customers," the statement read.
It continued: "It has been our honour to serve you, and I will cherish the memories we made together. Thank you for everything." The property housing the cafe has now been listed for sale, marking the definitive end of an era for the Bearwood Road culinary scene.
