BrewDog Pubs to Reopen Following Tilray Brands Acquisition
BrewDog has announced that some of its previously closed pubs will reopen after being purchased by American lifestyle firm Tilray Brands in a significant £33 million deal. The acquisition includes BrewDog's brand, intellectual property, and 11 bars located across the United Kingdom and Ireland, along with its brewery in Aberdeenshire.
Distillery Plans Back on the Table
Irwin Simon, the chief executive of Tilray Brands, confirmed that the distillery project is now back under consideration. He stated, "That is back on the table and more than likely we will get that back up and going again." Simon emphasized the value of the deal, noting, "[The deal] gave me a great brand, with the distribution, with the manufacturing and with the infrastructure. There is a lot to do here with BrewDog, but it ultimately was a good entry point."
Further Acquisitions and Job Losses
Tilray Brands is also in discussions to acquire additional assets from BrewDog in the United States and Australia, which could potentially include more breweries, bars, and even a hotel. However, this positive news comes amidst earlier announcements from BrewDog that 38 of its bars will be closing. These specific closures were not part of the £33 million sale to Tilray Brands.
The closure of these 38 bars is expected to result in job losses for 484 employees, according to administrators for the brewer. This development has raised concerns locally and nationally.
Political Reaction and Industry Challenges
Harriet Cross, the Member of Parliament for Gordon and Buchan where BrewDog is based, described the job losses as "disastrous" for the North East and the wider UK. She commented, "This announcement underlines the growing issues facing the drinks industry and hospitality sector, with challenging market conditions causing financial difficulties like this. I will immediately be writing to BrewDog’s new owners asking where these affected roles are, the future plans for the business, and what support is being given to staff at this unsettling time."
The situation highlights the ongoing pressures within the hospitality and brewing industries, even as new ownership brings hope for revival and expansion under Tilray Brands' stewardship.
