FCDO Travel Advice for Portugal and Turkey This Easter

Foreign Office Updates Travel Guidance for Portugal and Turkey Ahead of Easter

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued crucial travel advice for UK residents planning visits to Portugal or Turkey this Easter season. Before embarking on any journey, British nationals are strongly urged to thoroughly familiarize themselves with all entry requirements, security protocols, safety measures, and potential health risks associated with these destinations.

Portugal Travel Advisory Details

A recent update from the FCDO, originally issued on March 20 and confirmed as still current on March 29, provides specific guidance for travellers to Portugal. Currently, UK residents holding a British passport can enter Portugal without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to various purposes including tourism, visiting friends or family, attending business meetings, cultural or sports events, and participating in short-term studies or training programs.

Important Note: If you need to extend your visa-free stay in Portugal due to exceptional circumstances such as a medical emergency, you must apply to AIMA (the Portuguese immigration authority) using their contact form, which is only accessible to users within Portugal. It is essential to remember that if you are in Portugal with a valid residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count toward your 90-day visa-free limit.

Turkey Travel Advisory Updates

Travel advice for Turkey was also updated at the beginning of the month and remains relevant as of March 29. The FCDO currently advises against all travel within 10 kilometres of the border with Syria due to ongoing fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism in that region.

For those planning to enter Turkey across the land border from Iran, which remains open visa-free for individuals travelling on UK or Iranian passports for stays of up to 90 days, specific procedures must be followed. British nationals intending to cross this border must request facilitation from the British Embassy in Ankara by contacting the FCDO before travelling to the border area.

Required Information: When contacting the FCDO, travellers must clearly state which border point they intend to use and provide personal details including their full name, date of birth, and details of the travel document they plan to use for entry into Turkey. They must also indicate whether they are contacting from Iran or from the UK on behalf of a relative.

The FCDO further notes that Turkish authorities have reported the closure of the Esendere-Serow crossing point on the Iranian side to daily traders entering and exiting over the course of a single day. The usual entry requirements will apply, with British nationals permitted to enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Critical Warning: The FCDO emphasizes that if you intend to leave Iran overland, you do so entirely at your own risk. In Iran, simply holding a British passport or having perceived connections to the United Kingdom can be sufficient reason for Iranian authorities to detain individuals, making this route particularly hazardous.

The FCDO regularly updates its travel advice, with warnings either changing rapidly or remaining consistent for extended periods. All travellers are encouraged to check the latest guidance frequently before and during their trips to ensure they have the most current information regarding safety, security, and entry requirements for their destinations.
