Foreign Office Issues Venezuela Travel Warning

Foreign Office Updates Venezuela Travel Advice with Border Closure Alert

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a significant new travel warning for British holidaymakers planning trips to South America, specifically updating its guidance for Venezuela. The advisory includes critical information about an impending border closure with Colombia during election periods, which could severely impact travel plans and insurance validity.

Border Closure Details and Travel Restrictions

The FCDO confirmed that Colombia's land border with Venezuela will be closed from Saturday, 7 March at 6pm until Monday, 9 March at 6am. This temporary closure is directly linked to Colombian elections, and travellers are urged to plan ahead and anticipate potential disruptions. The Foreign Office strongly advises against all travel within 80km (50 miles) of the Colombia-Venezuela border, as well as within 40km (25 miles) of the borders with Brazil and Guyana.

Important Note: Travelling against FCDO advice could invalidate your travel insurance, leaving you financially exposed in case of emergencies or unforeseen incidents. The updated guidance was officially released on Friday, 6 March, emphasising the urgency for those currently in or planning to visit the region.

Expanded No-Travel Zones and Regional Warnings

In addition to the border restrictions, the FCDO advises against all travel to several specific areas within Venezuela. This includes the Orinoco Mining Arc region south of the Orinoco River, covering municipalities such as Cedeño, Sucre, Heres, Raul Leoni, Caroni, Piar, Padre Pedro Chien, Roscio, El Callo, and Sifontes. The advisory also extends to Zulia state, highlighting ongoing security concerns.

The Foreign Office referenced a 'state of external commotion' declared by Venezuelan authorities on 3 January, following air strikes across the country. This declaration could lead to further closures of Venezuelan borders and airspace, adding another layer of risk for travellers. British nationals are encouraged to monitor FCDO updates closely and reconsider any non-essential travel to these affected zones.

This comprehensive travel warning underscores the importance of staying informed about international advisories, especially in regions experiencing political or security volatility. Always check the latest FCDO guidance before embarking on overseas journeys to ensure your safety and compliance with insurance requirements.
