Greece Holiday Chaos: UK Tourists Stranded as Saharan Dust Storm Triggers Red Alert
UK tourists are facing widespread holiday cancellations and travel disruptions after a severe Saharan dust storm blanketed the Greek island of Crete, prompting authorities to issue a red alert. The dramatic weather event has turned skies a blood-orange hue, creating hazardous conditions and forcing multiple flight diversions.
Flight Diversions and Airport Chaos
Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis Airport has been plunged into chaos as violent winds and poor visibility battered the coast. At least three international flights scheduled to land in the popular holiday destination were unable to touch down and were diverted to alternative airports including Athens, Corfu, and Chania.
Among the affected services was a British Airways flight from London, which was rerouted to Corfu after conditions became too dangerous for landing. A Sky Express flight from Brussels was also forced to divert to Athens. Meanwhile, a Manchester to Rhodes flight was redirected to Heraklion but had to land at Ioannis Daskalogiannis Airport instead.
Tourist Frustration Mounts
British holidaymakers have expressed frustration over the sudden disruptions. One Easyjet passenger reported: "Our Easyjet flight took off for Crete at midday on Wednesday despite the weather warnings posted earlier. It turned around after 2 hours and came back to Gatwick where we joined travellers from another later flight that was cancelled trying to find out what was going on."
The tourist added: "Absolute chaos. No help from Easyjet. No flights there until at least Saturday. Holiday cancelled." Another visitor posted on social media: "Big clean up this morning! It was like being on Mars yesterday!" as the sun-kissed destination transformed into an otherworldly landscape.
Severe Weather Conditions
The Greek meteorological agency has issued a red alert warning over "very poor" visibility as dust levels surged to more than 1,000 micrograms per cubic metre. Reports indicate a tornado flipped a car in the region as Storm Erminio hit the island, with the city of Heraklion covered in red dust originating from Africa.
Forecasters have warned that another wave of Saharan dust could hit Crete as early as Thursday, potentially extending the travel disruptions. Authorities have urged both residents and tourists to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Remain indoors where possible
- Take extreme care on the roads
The situation remains fluid as cleanup operations continue and airlines assess when normal service might resume to the affected holiday hotspots.
