Majorca Rocked by Rare March Snowfall Phenomenon

The Balearic Island of Majorca has been hit by its heaviest snowfall of the winter season, a highly unusual event for March. Photographs and videos from the popular European holiday destination show snow covering parts of the island, including the Tramuntana mountain range.

Snowfall Details and Forecast

The snowfall began late on Saturday, March 14, and continued until approximately 2am on Sunday. According to geographer Alberto Darder, this marks "the strongest snowfall this winter in Mallorca." He noted that snow fell from altitudes of 800 meters upwards, representing the lowest snow level observed on the island this winter.

The Spanish meteorological agency AEMET, which had initially forecasted snow only above 1,000 meters, has reported that further snowfall cannot be ruled out for Sunday. However, any additional snow is expected to occur mainly at higher altitudes.

Darder, known locally as a "snow hunter" for being among the first to report snowfall in Majorca, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: "For me, seeing snow fall is better than watching €500 banknotes drop."

Current Conditions and Weather Outlook

Snow has remained only at the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana, with reports indicating approximately two centimeters of accumulation near the Puig Major tunnel.

Looking ahead to Sunday, March 15, AEMET has predicted intervals of cloud cover with showers and occasional thunderstorms. These could be locally strong during the morning hours and may include small hail, primarily in northern Majorca.

Context and Comparison

Majorca is a favorite destination for British holidaymakers and forms part of the Balearic Islands alongside Menorca and Ibiza. Meanwhile, the UK weather forecast shows no signs of similar snowfall. The Met Office predicts bright starts in the east with clouding over as rain spreads eastwards, followed by sunny spells and frequent blustery showers that may turn wintry over hills.

An outlook for Monday adds scattered showers initially, then cloud building with outbreaks of rain spreading across the country, though mostly dry conditions are expected in the far southeast. Breezy conditions are anticipated, especially along hills and coasts.
