Major UK Burger Chain Enters Administration, Shuts Majority of Sites

The prominent UK burger chain Meatliquor has plunged into administration, resulting in the closure of five out of its eight restaurants across the country. This move comes after the chain faced substantial financial losses in recent years, reflecting broader challenges within the UK hospitality sector.

According to official records published in The Gazette, administrators have now been formally appointed to oversee the chain's affairs. The decision to shutter multiple locations follows a significant drop in customer footfall, largely attributed to the ongoing Cost of Living crisis impacting consumer spending.

Specific Restaurant Closures and Remaining Locations

The closures include Meatliquor branches in Islington, Clapham Junction, and Queensway. Currently, only three sites remain operational: two Meatliquor restaurants in Oxford Circus and East Dulwich, along with its sister sports bar, BLOODsports, located in Covent Garden.

Founder Scott Collins previously highlighted the mounting pressures facing the business in an interview with Restaurant Online. He cited a combination of factors including VAT, business rates, rising beef and energy costs, geopolitical uncertainties, and recurring Tube strikes as significant hurdles.

"We're in the same position as a lot of others in the industry," Collins explained. "I'm just getting ahead of things before we're forced to."

Customer Reviews Reflect Mixed Experiences

Customer feedback on platforms like TripAdvisor presents a varied picture of the chain's offerings. In one 3/5 star review, a patron recounted a family visit for a pre-theatre lunch, noting that while the food quality was satisfactory, the overall experience was marred by pricing issues.

The reviewer detailed an incident where they were charged for a full pint of lager and a pint of lemonade after ordering a shandy, resulting in an £11 drink. "Serves me right. Anyone else know of a more expensive one in the world?" they remarked.

Conversely, other customers offered glowing endorsements. A 5/5 review praised the vibrant atmosphere and exceptional service, specifically highlighting staff member Jamie for keeping guests well-supplied with popcorn and drinks throughout the evening.

Another enthusiastic reviewer stated, "I wanted to write a review as I feel this place deserves a way higher rating. Had one of the best burgers I've had in a long time when I visited yesterday. The food was great and the staff was super friendly. All in all a great place."

The administration of Meatliquor underscores the severe pressures confronting UK hospitality businesses, from escalating operational costs to shifting consumer behaviors during economic uncertainty.
