Tourism Overload: Bourton-on-the-Water Residents Say Village Is 'Ruined' by Visitors
Residents in Bourton-on-the-Water, a picturesque Cotswolds village often dubbed 'The Venice of the Cotswolds' and beloved by day trippers from Birmingham, are speaking out against the overwhelming impact of tourism on their community. The village, which attracts approximately 300,000 holidaymakers and visitors each year, faces severe challenges from overcrowding, traffic congestion, and parking disputes.
Survey Reveals Widespread Discontent Among Locals
A comprehensive new survey conducted by Bourton Residents' Voice has highlighted the depth of frustration among the village's 4,000 inhabitants. The survey, which gathered responses from 200 local residents, uncovered alarming statistics:
- 94.6% of respondents believe that visitor numbers in Bourton-on-the-Water are excessive and unsustainable.
- 90.8% report that tourism has a detrimental impact on their overall quality of life.
- 92.6% feel that traffic and parking issues are not managed properly by authorities.
- 82% say the village has lost its sense of community due to the influx of tourists.
The survey results were reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, underscoring the urgent need for action to address these concerns.
Residents Voice Their Frustrations
A spokesperson for Bourton Residents' Voice emphasized that the survey confirms long-standing grievances among villagers. "This survey shows that what many residents have been experiencing for years is real, widespread, and getting worse," the spokesperson stated. "Bourton is not just a destination – it is a community. And right now, that community is being pushed aside. This is not about stopping tourism. It is about restoring balance and ensuring that the village remains a place where people can live, not just visit."
Residents have expressed their opinions directly, with one commenting, "The infrastructure is buckled as we speak, in fact it is broken." Another added, "The place is overrun. Yes they are welcome but the village cannot cope." These sentiments reflect the daily struggles faced by locals, particularly with parking problems exacerbated by coaches filled with sightseers.
Local Authorities Respond to the Crisis
Cotswold District Councillor Paul Hodgkinson acknowledged the issues and outlined steps being taken to find solutions. "The County Council is leading a new initiative to get to some solutions as quickly as possible in place - in April there's a workshop of all stakeholders to look at the whole village and its parking and traffic challenges," he said. This workshop aims to bring together residents, business owners, and officials to develop strategies for managing tourism more effectively.
However, not everyone agrees with the survey's findings. One visitor remarked, "6% response from a village of 4,000. That really is a snapshot! Not exactly comprehensive. They spend so long advertising it as a tourist destination, now complain about all the tourists." This perspective highlights the tension between promoting Bourton-on-the-Water as a tourist hotspot and preserving its residential character.
The Broader Impact on Community Life
The challenges in Bourton-on-the-Water are not isolated; they reflect a growing trend in popular tourist destinations across the UK. The village's proximity to the West Midlands, being just over an hour away, makes it a convenient escape for Brummies, but this accessibility has led to overcrowding that strains local resources. Previous reports have indicated that the village is being 'ruined' by social media influencers and TikTokers, further exacerbating the situation.
As the community grapples with these issues, the call for balanced tourism management becomes increasingly urgent. Residents hope that the upcoming workshop and ongoing initiatives will lead to practical solutions that allow both visitors and locals to enjoy Bourton-on-the-Water without compromising its unique charm and livability.
